Did you know that you do not need to be a tennis player or a golfer’s player to have tennis elbow?

Tennis Elbow vs Golfer's Elbow

WHAT IS TENNIS ELBOW & GOLFER’S ELBOW AND HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?

Elbow pain can be debilitating especially when you need to perform daily activities using it like being a chef, plumbers, painters and butchers. This could also happen to new mummies who just gave birth to their babies and start spending alot of time carrying their babies. So let’s break things down to what is tennis elbow and also what is golfer’s elbow.

TENNIS ELBOW

It happens in the muscles that are responsible to extend your wrist and where the muscle attaches is where the bony bump is outside of your elbow. It does become irritated through injury or overuse. It can present itself as an intermittent/ gradual discomfort.

GOLFER’S ELBOW

It happens in the muscles that are responsible in flexing your wrist are then attached to a bony bump that is attached on the inside of the elbow. This happens with activities involving heavy gripping or repeated hand movements. It elicits itself as dull aching pain.

For both conditions, it is generally hard to treat and it would usually need more time to heal as it involves your wrist that you generally use it everyday and it would be difficult to isolate your wrist and your elbow from doing anything at all. Generally, for conditions as such that are triggered by overusing of such muscles require much rest.

TREATMENTS FOR TENNIS ELBOW & GOLFER’S ELBOW

For starters, when there is pain, there usually inflammation going on. Imagine inflammation like a house on fire in which you would need to put out. Hence, icing and resting the elbow is the first thing you should do. Thereafter, there are several treatments available for Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow. Both treatments are quite similar.

However, the only difference would be just the area of treatment that would be different. The conservative (non-surgical) treatments available are Chiropractic joint manipulation, rehabilitation like soft tissue therapy, therapeutic modalities and also therapeutic exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles as well.

Other than that, research has shown that Shockwave therapy and Low level Intensity Laser Therapy has also aids in treating both these conditions.

Bracing would be another option that is available. However, before getting anything off the shelf, you should be speaking to your healthcare practitioners on which brace best suites you rather than getting anything off the shelf and end up buying the wrong brace that could potentially make your condition worse. Ultimately for both of these conditions, rest and ice is the important key.

Other than these options, there are definitely options like Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, corticosteroids, prolotherapy and sodium hyaluronate that are available. Your doctors may recommend this if your condition persists and find no relief in the conservative treatments. However it is not a fix to the golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow, it mostly acts as a analgesic and also to help stimulate healing to the part of the body.
