All You Need To Know About De Quervain Tenosynovitis
Having pain over the thumb side of your wrist? Unable to even turn open the door handle or even open a jar without pain? Looking for answers? Look no further as we debunk what is De Quervain Tenosynovitis.
HOW DOES DE QUERVAIN TENOSYNOVITIS HAPPEN?
You must be asking, what is De Quervain Tenosynovitis got to do with pain over the thumb side of your wrist? Basically the 2 tendons that are attached to your wrists are inflamed, which are abductor pollicis longus (APL) and extensor pollicis brevis (EPB). Both are responsible for movements like gripping and grasping.
The inflammation of these 2 tendons happens when there are repetitive motions done especially if your job requires you to do a certain action and or an accident or an injury to your wrist itself will provoke an inflammation to the covering sheath. Thereafter the inflammation of the sheath will then provoke further inflammation to the tendon itself.
Interestingly, people that are of age between 30 to 50 years old have a higher chance of developing De Quervain Tenosynovitis. Other than that, pregnant mommies are also at a higher risk of developing this condition due to water retention but mainly, if it does not affect mommies during pregnancy, it might affect them somehow when the baby is out and they need to pick them up and carry them around. This puts the wrist in an awkward position in which places pressure on the wrist. This condition affects mainly women and it does affect those whose jobs include repetitive hand motion.
TREATMENTS FOR DE QUERVAIN TENOSYNOVITIS
It is important to know what is the cause of your condition for example if your line of work requires you to perform repetitive hand motion in which places your wrist in an awkward position, hence you would need to revisit some proper handling techniques or proper working ergonomics.
Other than that treatments like chiropractic adjustments, rehabilitative exercises, therapeutic ultrasound and also using of thumb spica to immobilize your thumb may be required. Treatment options like shockwave therapy and dry needling may be attempted.
If the pain gets out of proportion, you may attempt Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) but under your GP’s supervision. You should expect a recovery within a few weeks time, however it would heavily depend on your daily activity and how involved your wrist is in your daily activities.
TREATMENT COST FOR DE QUERVAIN TENOSYNOVITIS
Cost of treatment at TAGS starts from RM138/session (ala-carte). Of course, the treatment cost would have to be considered in the treatment plan – what treatment is being done, and how many sessions are needed. This depends on the severity of your condition.
