Myofascial trigger point dry needling therapy is a very minimally invasive procedure where a fine needle or acupuncture needle is inserted to a muscle via skin. It is aimed at myofascial trigger points which are hyperirritable spots in skeletal muscle that are associated with a hypersensitive palpable nodule in a taut band which causes muscle pain. The needle administration will cause a local twitch response which is a voluntary spinal cord reflex contraction of the muscle fibers in a taut band. Triggering a local twitch response has been shown to reduce the concentration of nociceptive substances in the chemical environment near myofascial trigger point.
